This is a great plugin with lots of features.
I’m modifying templates to include images from my posts using custom fields:
<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'custom_image', true); ?>
It kinda gets ignored. How can I achieve this?
I’m guessing $related_query->the_post(); is different from standard the_post() calls, but don’t really know how.
Thanks for your help!
I apologize but to be honest I don’t remember testing the metadata functions. Are you getting *no* metadata or the metadata for another post? Do you get an error?
No errors, the metadata field just “isn’t retrieved”.
Let me know if you have a solution for this, meanwhile i’m leaving the titles only 🙂
Or, in general, can you try printing
$post->IDto see if that’s printing the correct ID? Perhaps also printing
$idto see if they match?
hey mitchko, i’m sorry… problem solved…
i went only through the exact posts for which their related posts didn’t have the custom field that i was looking for.
thanks anyway… still one of the best wp-plugins out there 🙂
I’m also looking to pull a thumbnail for the post image. I think the best way to do this is to use another plugin called Get-the-image By Justin Tadlock. This low query plugin retrieves existing thumbs, or resizes images within g the loop.
I know there is another newb out there like myself who is totally confused can you please explain how you implemented the other plugin into yarpp or how you figured out a solution?
houseofstrauss – good tip… I’ll have to check that one out.
tonyparra28 – Check out the YARPP templating tutorial: http://mitcho.com/blog/projects/yarpp-3-templates/
I have to say, though, that if you don’t have some good WP template (or general PHP) experience, this templating option could be relatively difficult.
I’d *LOVE* for YARPP to post thumbnails for related posts (just like linkwithin) but keep the text links as well. Posts only, not for rss. I’ll play with get-the-image, that might be just the ticket. Thanks for the link!
This would be great! There is a plugin that used to do this. But because it has not been updated since Feb 2008. It does not work with WP 2.7+
I really wish YARPP would add this feature.
John25, as you see from the conversation above, this is definitely possible with YARPP! Check out the templating tutorial for more info:
Perhaps in the future I’ll add a sample template that uses that Get-the-image plugin.
Thank you for your reply. I have read that it works with Yet Another Photoblog. Yet the problem with Yet Another Photoblog is that every image has to be first uploaded to YAPB, instead of taking the image from the post.
If you have a new blog that is fine, but if you are like me and have 800+ posts. Then it would be a huge problem to have to manually add every image to YAPB so that it works with YARPP.
Unfortunatly I am not good with PHP. But if I find a solution I will post it here, as there are many more people who would like to have a post image to there related post links
I’ve heard of people in your situation using YARPP with the Post-Thumbs plugin which will find images in the posts themselves and turning them into images.
There’s also a good new tutorial on adding post thumbs in related posts—not sure if it’ll help you, though.
Hope those help.
I found someone who edited your plugin so that it autmaticly adds the tumbnail of the related post. Unline the tutorial where you have to manually add custom fields. Which can be a hassle if you have 1000+ posts 🙂
