I’m using 220.127.116.11 of WP Tweet Button and am seeing count discrepancies between the count on the tweet button and what’s reported by Twitter.
First Example Site:
The tweet button is reporting “5” tweets at this time for this post, If I click on the “5”, I get directed to Twitter and it shows “No Tweet results for http://chasnote.com/2011/03/19/the-advertising-battles-of-sxsw-2011/.”:
I was not sure if this was “just me” so I found a second site using WP Tweet Button and they appear to have the same problem:
The tweet button is reporting “14” tweets at this time. If I click on the 14, I get directed to Twitter with no results:
Is this my problem, WP Tweet Button’s problem, or Twitter’s problem? I’d expect the “count” to be a count of all tweets mentioning the URL (or a shortened version) of the wordpress post.
Thanks for any help/understanding you can provide!
I’m afraid this is a twitter cache issue. The plugin has no real control of the results.
Thanks for the response!

Can you explain specifically what you mean by cache here?
I can understand Twitter caching and not recalculating “TweetCounts” sums for every request, but then I’d expect the posted TweetCount to be lower than a search on Twitter’s site (and eventually, over time, catch up).
However, I’m seeing a TweetCount higher than the tweets returned in a Twitter search. That doesn’t sound cache-related to me — does it to you?
If you mean that Twitter Search Results has the cache and “recent tweets” aren’t returned in search results until they “get into a search cache” — this post:
is a week old, has been reporting “5 tweets” since Thursday (4 days ago), but clicking through to Twitter search:
Reports no results. Is 4 days is kind of long to attribute to caching?
If you’re aware of any twitter-specific API discussion of this problem (outside the scope of WordPress), please link me.
Thanks for writing/supporting the widget!
I’ve had my fights with twitter search in the past. I gave up a few weeks ago. I honestly don’t know what’s going on at twitter, but I know their counts are calculated and cached. I don’t know how often the cache is refreshed. I’ve also been noticing that tweets happen to just fade away from search results after a while. This is probably due to capacity issues on twitter’s end. In order to respond in nominal time, they have to remove old tweets from their search index. These factors affect both count consistency and the search results, but again, I don’t work for twitter so, I don’t know more than what I’ve been able to see from the outside.
