[Plugin: WP To Twitter] Unable To Connect To Twitter (6 posts)

I'm trying to make it so that I can send automatic Twitter updates whenever I post a new blog, however none of the plugins are able to connect to Twitter. I've tried half a dozen Twitter plugins (WP To Twitter, TweetThis, TweeU, Twitter Tools, ShortenToPing, TwitMe, TweetylyUpdate and more) and none of them will connect to twitter.

Most just dont connect and say failed. With WP To Twitter I atleast get this message:

Successfully contacted the Cli.gs API via Snoopy and created a shortened link.
Successfully contacted the Bit.ly API via Snoopy.
Failed to contact the Twitter API via Snoopy.
Your server does not appear to support the required PHP functions and classes for WP to Twitter to function. You can try it anyway - these tests aren't perfect - but no guarantees.

One time I did get this message:

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to
    twitter.com:80 (Connection refused) in
[full path to WP site]/wp-includes/class-snoopy.php on line

Im using Hostgator as a host and WordPress 2.9.1. Any idea how I can make WordPress connect to Twitter (either using thi splugin or a different one)?

Set up a TwitterFeed account = TwitterFeed. That'll get around using a plugin at all.

How does creating an account there help stop the error?
I created the acct, but I am still getting:

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to twitter.com:80 (Connection refused) in wp-includes/class-snoopy.php on line 1142

When I click the connect to twitter button, nothing shows up in the next page except the pink box telling me update the settings, which I already did. Clearly somethings not right. Any other ways i can see what's the problem or where the errors are?

Im using the latest version of wordpress 3.0.1 and latest version of wp-to-twitter (just updated)
