[Plugin: WP Mail SMTP] Migration problem?

    Hi,

I was using the plugin for quite a while now without any problems on my testing environment (Win7 +XAMPP) + local SMTP server. Today, I moved my site to a root server running UBUNTU server 12.04 minimal without local SMTP server.
After configuring the plugin to my (now) remote SMTP server, wp_mail works from sending test mails and within php scripts. But when I try to use wp-admin/users.php to delete users or resend activation key, constantly a message is popping up saying that my server has not activated the mail() function. Meanwhile, I also configured the php.ini [mail function] section to point to my remote SMTP server, but it keeps on throwing error messages on me.
Is WP user admin not using wp_mail()? Shouldn’t it be sent via the SMPT re-route of the plugin? How can I get rid of this? I’m afraid that currently no registration keys are sent out because of this and users can’t register on my site.
