Support » Plugin: WP-Filebase Download Manager » [Plugin: WP-Filebase Download Manager] GZip not compatible with Filebase plugin?

  • Hi!

I take this opportunity to congratulate you sincerely; your plugin is one of my favorites!

The other day I activated gzip compression on my blog (adding the line:

in index.php of my installation) to decrease the load time of the web, but I found the unpleasant surprise that downloading files to stop working.

So that you can see, I have kept the GZIP enabled, you can try to download the files from here, and see for yourselves the error:

Do you know this issue? Is there any workaround?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi all again,

I have been studing the issue, and I have found new interesting info. If GZIP is enabled, files cannot be downloaded using Firefox (desktop and Android version), Explorer, Chrome… but in Opera mini (Android) it works! I dont konw if it makes any sense… is a browser dependant problem?

As is in production I have been forced to disable GZIP, so henceforth you cannot force the issue in my web.

    Anybody has the solution?

    Thanks in advance

Opera Mini is different than other browsers; it access the web through a proxy. Not sure why that would fix the problem (maybe an issue with the headers), but that is probably why you’re getting different results.

Personal advice from what I remember: GZip static files (js/css). Unless your website is static (using some sort of WP Cache), it’s not worth compressing all of WP – which is dynamic. I could be mistaken about this. And if this is correct, you might need to setup caching of the compressed static files (so the server doesn’t have to compress them on each request).
