    I was able to figure out a solution that at least works for my subdomains.

    I edited class-wp-external-links.php as follows:

    Do a search for:
    baseUrl: ‘<?php echo get_bloginfo( ‘url’ ) ?>’

    And replace with:

    baseUrl: ‘YOUR TOP DOMAIN HERE (i.e. google.com)’

    Do a search for:
    strpos( $href, ‘strtolower( get_bloginfo( ‘url’ ) )’ ) === FALSE

    And replace with:
    strpos( $href, ‘YOUR TOP DOMAIN HERE (i.e. google.com)’ ) === FALSE

    That did the trick for me.

    Although you already solved the problem yourself, in the new version it is possible to exclude (ignore) links of another (sub)domain.
