• On my site I want to offer a few (less than 10) free and paid downloadable products.. I would like to use an e-commerce program so that I can collect the payment for the paid downloads and track who has downloaded the free items without needing a different plugin to manage the free products.

Seems like none of the WordPress e-commerce plugins properly support free downloadable products. WP E-Comerce is no exception.. The manner in which free or paid downloads are handled is done using the most awkward and inconvenient workflow.

The WP e-commerce program requires the shopwoner to accept the payment before the download is made available to the buyer. This makes NO sense — if the product is free or paid via PayPal, or Authorize.net (where the payment receipt can be confirmed), the plugin should make the download immediately available. For small sops this may not present an issue, but for busy shops this adds an extra step that shopowners should NOT have to make.

Other standalone e-commerce programs support this very type of workflow. It’s too bad that WP e-commerce does not..

  • Hi DivaVocals, consider commissioning a WP e-Commerce expert to build this functionality for you and contribute it back to the Core Plugin.

If I build another WP E-Commerce site for a client and they this functionality I would indeed commission someone to build this for me (as I have done for other modules and plugins). This was for my own site, and while I could have used Zen Cart or Magento (which does have this functionality) I needed less e-commerce and more CMS for this particular site. In the meantime, I found a really workable “workaround” for my immediate issue..

I’ve contributed plenty of things back to the open source community, but these are all volunteer effort level of stuff.. Dunno about “contributing” back a modification that I paid for though..

DivaVocals: I’m curious about your workaround for this.

‘Dunno about “contributing” back a modification that I paid for though.. ‘ – fully open to using free stuff and having other people spend money on your behalf but not the other way eh ?

I really need to offer free downloads too but this plugin doesn’t allow it without forcing the user to enter the credit card details. Why force this upon the use for a free download??

    Makes no sense to me.

I’d love to know of a work around.

Hi guys, this has been raised on the GetShopped.org Support Forum (http://getshopped.org/forums/topic.php?id=4848), I’m going to whip up a small Plugin to auto-increment any Sales that total $0.00 to the Accepted Payments status releasing the Product downloads. Follow the support topic over the next few days 🙂
