[Plugin: WordPress.com Stats] Something odd is happening (possible change at WordPress.Com?)

As of today, it would appear my WordPress.Com API key is no more. The profile page tells me I can get an Askimet API key by going to the Askimet site, but all references to WordPress.Com API key and related site tracking is removed from my WordPress.Com profile. In it’s place, it tells me:

You are not a member of this site.

If you have just installed the WordPress.com Stats plugin, this error probably appeared because the API key entered in the plugin belongs to a different WordPress.com user account.

The owner of the API key must visit this site’s stats page to grant access.

It appears as if WordPress.Com may have removed support for external WordPress site tracking/statistics… or this may be another of the ongoing technical difficulties from recent attacks (I really cannot tell).
