Thanks Joost for your awesome WordPress SEO plugin... I've finally got around to switching to it and am looking forward to improved rankings.

A minor question though: in this article you say that sitemap.xml should redirect automatically to sitemap_index.xml; but on my site I just get a 404 for sitemap.xml.

Also WordPress SEO doesn't appear to support gzip'd sitemaps; is this correct? I like the fact that pages marked noindex automatically don't appear in the WordPress SEO sitemap, but aside from this I'm hard pressed to see the advantage of having the sitemap functionality built into the SEO plugin given that there are more powerful sitemap plugins out there.

WordPress by default does not create/edit/manage any sitemap files.

SEO by Yoast will create a sitemap (called sitemap_index.xml, or index.php/sitemap_index.xml). However it's actually generated by runtime from what I can see, and does not support gzip compression.

You can go in your robots.txt file (that you created) and set the sitemap location there. Additionally, you can submit your custom sitemap with google/bing webmaster tools. (They are both separate tools.)
