Support » Plugin: Yoast SEO » [Plugin: WordPress SEO by Yoast] Newbie question about sitemaps

  • Hello,

sorry for this newbie question, but do I have to submit the xml sitemap I find in wordpress SEO to Google Webmaster Tool ?

Cause I set up SEO 2 or 3 days ago, and when I go to Google Webmaster Tool, in sitemaps section, they say “no sitemap found”.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
    Regards

No – it’s not essential. Google will try to find it when it visits your site. Submitting just ensures that it get the sitemap file quickly.

Ok, thank you for your answer.

If I want to submit, do I only submit the XML Sitemap index, or each file separately ? Mine contains 7 files under the index one.

    Thanks a lot

An xml sitemap is usually just 1 file.

If you’re using Yoast’s WordPress SEO plugin, go to SEO Settings > XML Sitemaps.
Check the box that says “Check this box to enable XML sitemap functionality”.
Directly underneath, where it says “You can find your XML Sitemap here:”, click the button and make note of the URL.

Now, in the root directory of your website, either edit the existing robots.txt file or if it doesn’t exist, create it. At the very bottom add this line:
    Sitemap: http://domain.com/sitemap_index.xml

When Google spiders your site, it will use robots.txt to find your sitemap.
