In post meta description template if you put only %%excerpt%% its working fine but if you put f.e. %%excerpt%% – %%category%% %%tag%% all together than it shows only category and title without excerpt.
I can’t reproduce that… Those exact settings work fine on my test blog… Have you tried disabling all other plugins and switching to default theme to see if it’s not either of those causing the issue?
I did all as you told, and even I did same to another blog and i got same results.
If template is this:
%%excerpt%% – %%category%% Poster. %%tag%%, Best Demotivational Posters
28 May 2012 – – Demotivational Poster. Children, Life, Best Demotivational Posters
If template is this:
%%title%% – %%category%% Poster. %%tag%%, Best Demotivational Posters
28 May 2012 – A Happy Childhood – Demotivational Poster. Children, Life, Best Demotivational Posters
Any Idea or suggestion will be more than welcome.
Is there an excerpt there? Or content in the body section?
Yes there is a content. F.e. for this same post content is a Picture and text is “A Happy Childhood – The Worst Possible Preparation For Life”
Im not using excerpt option on this blog and because of it I put %%excerpt%% (Replaced with the post/page excerpt (or auto-generated if it does not exist) instead of %%excerpt_only%% in hope that this will auto generate.
On another blog where I tested the same there is much more text, and using option to show excerpts of posts, so I think that short text isn’t an issue.
Also this first blog uses magazine layout.
Its maybe good to mention that when i use only %%excerpt%% it works fine
28 May 2012 – A Happy Childhood – The Worst Possible Preparation For Life …
If you switch to the default theme and switch off all other plugins, does it work?
I did on second blog which I descovered has same problem, switched on twentyten theme and disabled all plugins and it doesn’t work. This blog is on genesis educational child theme with 2 plugins yours and capthca.
I did few screenshots:
Sorry I misunderstood what you were saying. The excerpt doesn’t work in the snippet preview indeed, does it work in the output of your posts?
I just checked and in the output is working:) I didnt try to publish post with this configuration because I thought its not working as snippet was showing. As you said problem is only in the snippet preview which honestly isn’t so big problem only can confuse someone (as me f.e.:). I found the post meta description template mega useful when you don’t have so many text in your posts as in my example. Do you think creating post meta description as I do can lead to keyword meta description stuffing?
Thanks for the support.
I’m honestly not that big a fan of using the excerpt, but that might just be me 🙂
Also Im not a big fan of using a excerpt on its own so Im doing some combinations.
I dont think its only you. Every serious blogger should do its own meta descriptions as Im doing on another blog. But if not many time to do so, than your template is there:).
