  • A couple questions related to upgrading site-wide tags.

    – originally upgraded to WP 3.0 from WPMU (with SWT)
    – The sitewide-tags plugin is in the mu-plugins directory
    – currently running WP 3.2.1 and SWT 0.4.0.1

Question #1: What is the best way to update to SWT 0.4.1.1? It looks like there is a newer way to do this instead of just dropping the plugin into the mu-plugins directory.

Question #2: My swt is configured to post to main blog. This has gotten to be ugly, with the main blog cluttered with all sorts of sub-blog posts. Can I just switch over to, say, a /tags blog? If so – can I still show the posts on the main site? The idea was to allow sub-blog posters to add well-known categories to their posts so that the posts would show up in categorized places on the main blog.

I’ve experienced some of the duplicate posts issues described in this forum. Hoping the upgrade to 0.4.1.1 will fix that.

    Thanks!

    1) Yes, just replace it. The latest version has its own admin screen under network settings.

    2) Yes, you can change it to a different or new blog at any time. If your not concerned with keeping old posts what you can do instead of switching blogs is set it down to about 1000 posts to keep and give it a week to purge the older ones off, then you can set it back up to 5000 if you want.

04.1.1 does fix the duplicate post issue.

    Thanks Ron!

The last piece of the puzzle for me is the question of whether I can display (SWT-pulled-sub-blog) posts on the main blog if I switch the SWT configuration to post to a different blog…

Only a small number of the sub-blog posts are tagged with the well-known categories that cause them to be displayed on the main blog. So we are pulling up hundreds of sub-blog posts and only displaying a few of them. Thanks for the idea of lowering the threshold to drain off older posts.

I was looking at your WP Curator plugin. That looks like it would solve the “separating the wheat from the chaff” issue we have, but I like the idea of sub-blog posters being able to “promote” their posts to the main blog using the well-known categories, without the super-admin having to get involved.

There isn’t an easy way to pull posts from another blog automatically.

If you wanted to pull from a subblog you could use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-featured-posts/. It’s manual like the Curator. Essentially the Curator is a cross between SWT and the featured posts. The main difference is the Curator is single click.
