WordPress Backup to Dropbox
[resolved] Backup very, very slow (5 posts)

    Started backup at 11:36. By 23:00 it had only completed 115MB of 223MB 51.5% in 11h 24mins!

The plugin doesn't seem to do any more than I have been doing by copying the entire HTDOCS folder to my hard drive using FTP. And that only takes 15 mins.

Am I missing something or is it just another poor plugin??

The backup relies on wp-cron.php that is a quasi cron task in the WordPress core. It relies on traffic to your website to kick off tasks.

So, hypothetically, lets say you blog gets 100 hits a day and your host kills the PHP scripts that run for longer then 2 mins.

Thats 4 hits an hour, where most of them are going to happen during peak times. So there can be hours between hits.

So it does 2 mins of backing up and has to wait an hour or so before a recover task is kicked off.

This is why it takes a very long time to backup!

To speed it up I would add wp-cron.php to your servers crontab.

Yes, mine has been running over night. And in about 12 hours, it has only backed up 20 some megs. At this rate, it's going to take months for the first backup to be complete.

Can you explain about adding wp-cron.php to my servers crontab? Is this something that can be done on a shared server?

If I get the premium extension so that it zips the files, does it still take as long, and does it still rely on traffic on my site? Does using the plugin count as being uploaded through the dropbox website, where there is a file size limit of 300 mb, or does it count as using a mobile app/desktop application with the only limit being the size of your dropbox?

As of version 1.4 I have implemented a new API that allows me to use the new chunked upload feature of Dropbox, which allows for files greater then 150MB.

The zip extension is a lot quicker. On my blog a non zip backup can take 2-3 hours, whereas a zip backup will only take 5-10 mins.

All extension have a 100% money back guarantee, so you can give it a go and, if it does not work with your server configuration ill refund your payment.
