 * Hello,
 * I’m having a terrible time getting my site updated. Currently it says that in
   order to update my site, I need to update my PHP from 5.1.6 to 5.2.4 or higher.
   I’ve been begging my provider to for a few months now to no avail so what I’m
   wondering is- is this affecting my site in any way?
 * I have not been able to download a plugin for awhile now. Every time I do, my
   site stalls and I have to go uninstall the plugin via the FTP. I also haven’t
   been able to build a new page or new sidebar either.
 * Any ideas?? This is for my job, so it’d be much appreciated if any ideas were
   given to get this problem fixed. IF it’s all about updating the PHP, then I will
   feel a lot better about harrassing my provider to get it updated.
 * Thanks!

 * What actually says that?

 * When I go to the Dashboard > Updates and try to update WordPress to version 3.2.1
   it says that:
 * “You cannot update because WordPress 3.2.1 requires PHP version 5.2.4 or higher.
   You are running version 5.1.6.”
 * And in regard to plugins, I’ve actually had no trouble updating ones I’ve downloaded
   in the past, only downloading new ones.

 * Ok, I tracked down the official announcement about about php 5.2.x: [http://wordpress.org/news/2010/07/eol-for-php4-and-mysql4/](http://wordpress.org/news/2010/07/eol-for-php4-and-mysql4/)
 * The announcement states that users will not be able to upgrade to 3.2 if the
   server doesn’t meet the requirement. The only thing I can think of is to do a
   manual upgrade through FTP but you run the risk of breaking your site if 3.2
   is coded with a check for php 5.2.x.

 * So do you think this is the reason why my widgets aren’t loading?
 * I had success downloading a widget today – but when I went to the widget page
   and tried to put it onto a sidebar, it wouldn’t work. In fact, when I try to
   move any widget, it won’t work.

 * Unlikely, but then again, PHP 5.1 isn’t supported to it;s possible.
 * But. Yes, you need to upgrade PHP to use WP 3.2 and up. It’s possible some of
   your plugins also require that.
 * Tell your host that there are multiple security issues with PHP 5.1, and if they’re
   not going to upgrade, you’re going to leave.
