The update of the backupwordpress plugin failed with an error because the server timed out. I deleted the plugin folder, manually downloaded and unzipped, and activation failed. Tried this several times and it keeps failing.

When I tried to download the plugin normally I got the following error:

Download failed. Previous alarm fired off!

So, I tried updating the Akismet plugin to the new version, assuming that the error was related to backupwordpress, but I still get this error:

    Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.3.0.4.zip…
Download failed. Previous alarm fired off!

It doesn’t seem to be specific to any particular plugin as far as I can see, but I also can’t see this error listed on WordPress or anywhere in Google, which is puzzling.

Any thoughts on how I can fix this or on what to check for?

While I have been waiting (and hoping) for a response I thought I would search both the WordPress files and the database to see if I could identify where this error was being generated.

I can’t find the words “alarm” or “fired” anywhere, which is puzzling.

    Very Weird Indeed!

I have eliminated the problem, but still have no idea where this error message was being generated.

I spotted on the failed activation of the Backupwordpress plugin that the latest version requires WordPress 3.9.3 and we are on 3.9.2.

I removed the plugin folder and replaced it by the previous version. The plugin then activated ok, and I was also able to update Akismet to the latest version.

So I guess this is fixed, but it would be interesting to see if anyone else gets this error.
