  • Hello!

I’m trying use my newly created custom taxonomies in the menu, but I’m not sure if the way I’m doing it is the smartest way, or if it’s even possible. I have a basic understanding of HTML and pretty much no PHP experience… I could really use some advice!

I have a cooking blog and I added these custom taxonomies: cuisines, meal, skill level etc. Is it possible to put “cuisines” in the menu (so not just “French, Italian, Japanese etc, which are the only options I’m seeing now). I actually would like to do that to the categories as well (have a menu item called “categories”)

Eventually I want to create something like this: an advanced search page that filters posts using the taxonomies. And I’d also like to add custom fields with dietary information.
.. I have no idea how I’m going to do all this… yet!

So my question is, with this goal in mind, is creating these custom taxonomies a good idea (if yes, how do I make menu items out of them)? Or should I just stick to the categories and devide those up?
Will I be able to build an advanced search page using Views? If it’s not necessary, I’d rather not. I just spent a lot of money on a theme…
Oh, and is it also possible to make a menu item for each custom post type?

So, yeah.. A lot of questions. I’d really REALLY appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

  • I decided not to work with custom posts and only use the default categories. I am still using custom taxonomies.

As for the menu items. I’ll just add parents (eg cuisines) and turn the taxonomies in to children (eg Japanese, Freach, Italian).

I still need to figure out a way to display the information in a nice way. As for the search page, I’m still clueless. I’m just hoping I’m setting everything up so that it will be easy to do later.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    * I mean, use the default categories instead of custom post types.
