  • Alex: I would recommend making it clearer that in the Twitter Tools settings you have to click on the particular rectangular box for the Twitter account to actually enable it! I finally discovered it after a lot of delving around when I finally found this thread.

Of course now that I *know* I have to do that, it’s stunningly obvious πŸ™‚

Ah, but does it actually work for you once it is enabled? Does it actually download the tweets of the relevant account?

i have pretty much all the same complaints as you guys and wrestled with these two plugins for hours last night. eventually i did get social to connect to my twitter account (i was logged into the account at the time, i think that helped). i dont want the new features of Social that lets my visitors create accounts on my site so in the Advanced Options of Social i turned that off.
in the twitter tools settings i did have to pick my account i had just hooked up in Social and even after that it still didn’t work until i clicked it again which opened up further options including a checkbox for ‘enable twitter toos’ (seemed a bit redundant since i was in the settings for twitter tools, one would think that’s implied.)

for those having trouble with the broadcasting portion of Social, i have no advice since i long ago stopped using Twitter Tools for that service. I didn’t like it’s facebook push so i use Facebook Page Publish. I was using it for twitter push until i set up custom URL shortening for my site with Yourls. The only reason i still had Twitter Tools was for the twitter feed sidebar widget as it was by far the best for that.

only thing now is, you used to be able to tweet directly from your sidebar widget if you were logged into the site. this was super convenient as you didn’t need to log out of your own account if you had twitter already open. this is gone now and it was 50% of the whole reason i used this plugin.

correction: Social’s user-creation feature is not turned off in Advanced Options, i was remembering wrong. i turned off broadcasting there since, as described, i already have other solutions for that. i did turn off the comment display too, as it’s not compatible with my theme.

I don’t get why it says it has been working for a year when this is the first time a plugin upgrade ever completely borked my site.

But I will trust Alex and walk through all of this and see if it works again.

Yeah, I came here to complain, I refuse to let an application I’ve never heard of permission to modify my profile. That’s just… too much for me.

Sorry, I just went back to 2.4 and I’m sticking to it.

Version 2.4 will not help. Its all about Twitter actually. Alex already responded and clear things. Twitter shutdown the old API endpoint on October 11. So all plugins like Twitter Tools was not working. And it will not work anymore. What Alex did is a simple try and start of a new process to make it work. If you want to complain do that with Twitter. Here Alex is the guy who made this wonderful plugin, he have to be thankful to him. He is still trying to get this around.

Rahman, you are right. Thanks alexkingorg for creating this tool! I hope it gets fixed, but even if it does not, thanks Mate!

If you use 2.4, making the following changes to twitter_tools.php that are mentioned in this thread: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/twitter-tools-api-compatibility?replies=9 to use the 1.1 API URLs that might get most everything working again.

I made the change and it started importing my tweets again.

The only parts of Twitter Tools I used were the tweet importing to make a Twitter Digest (which I ended up writing my own script to create using the information in the database and haven’t used Twitter Tools to do this in a long time) and sending out a tweet when I made a post. I only had the main piece activated. The other three (bitly, hashtag, ?) were not activated.

Anyway, since then I’ve written my own script to parse my Twitter timeline using the Twitter API and moved the tweet data to a separate database out of my blog’s database and have removed Twitter Tools.

It’s not Alex’s fault. What Twitter did also broke Pandora Radio a few days ago as their Twitter Sharing mechanism comes up with “Twitter Not Found” now. LOL.

Is there no other available tool than Social? I really don’t want it to be able to modify my Twitter profile.

Adding my two cents: I noticed Twitter tools stopped working with the update and was now asking me to add Social plugin. I added Social and noticed that when it was activated my Disqus comments stopped working.

A little poking around showed that this is a known issue with Social integration.

So my choice now is either Twitter tools or Disqus comments.

I agree, the Social plugin makes me grant it permission to modify my Twitter profile and sign me up to follow whomever it wants to. Way too invasive.

UPDATE. A little while after posting this, I went into my dashboard again. There was suddenly a new section called TWEETS under the options menu section that had not been there after the upgrade, until I’d closed down and reopened my site several times. I looked in there, and all my more recent tweets were present in that section, though they still were not showing in the widget on my blog.

So, I went to the widget section under Appearance, opened that widget, and, not changing anything, just clicked Save again.

All of my current Tweets then showed up in the footer when I reloaded the page.

Haven’t a clue why it fixed itself … but I thought I would post this update to what I wrote earlier (see below) in case it helps someone else, too.
    ===========

I hate to just say “me too”, but “me too”….

I’ve done pretty much everything described above. Social is now installed, my Twitter account entered and activated, the tweets in the database updated, etc….

Twitter Tools is still only displaying my tweets up to Oct 11th, and will not pull in anything more recent than that into the widget display on my website (www.gazehound.com). It’s all I use it for — just displaying what I tweet elsewhere as I use that to keep up to the minute with my clients.

I’ve tried pretty much everything that everyone has suggested in the various threads complaining about the most recent update requiring Social. All I want is for current info to be displayed in that widget.

Has anyone actually gotten the most recent update of this plugin to actually pull in current tweets?

I too can not see any tweets in the widget – the main reason I wanted this. And it’s not creating posts from tweets either. It is creating tweets from posts, but they do show up in the widget etc.

    Has anyone figure this out?
