  • *Bump*

Having the same issue, and I am wondering if it has something to do with OAuth support for PHP. WP Support center breaks down Twitter Tools pretty nicely here:
    http://wphelpcenter.com/plugins/twitter-tools/

And While I’m not certain, I am gonna run that fix by my server admin and see if that might be a possible solution.

    More soon.

Authentication failed messages usually mean that Twitter cannot identify the application that is calling it. Make sure you have the correct API keys and tokens from Twitter. You get them after signing up at: http://dev.twitter.com/apps/new

I was getting this same error for the last few weeks. My information was all correct.

My solution: I have a deicated server and I updated PHP and rebuilt Apache. I can’t tell you what I might have checked (it does require Curl support apparently), but after this, it would be able to authenticate.

HOWEVER, even though it authenticates now, it still isn’t posting anything.

“Authentication Failed. Please check your credentials and make sure Twitter is up and running” The same error for me, Some solution? I’ll wait for response.

    bump same issue here.

Same here. How is WordTwit working, and Twitter tools not working? There should be something wrong with Twitter tools 😉

I have gotten the same “Authentication Failed. Please check your credentials and make sure Twitter is up and running” for two different sites on two different servers. Have checked and double-checked that all OAuth keys are correct.

Very frustrating that I can’t get this to work. Any suggestions?

    Same thing here. 🙁

Same here. I asked for support, and they asked me 100 dollars just to assess the issue. Time to check out other twitter plugins!

    There are some inconsistencies here…

Twitter Tools Options Page is asking for:

    2. Copy and paste your consumer key and consumer secret into the fields below

    1. Twitter Consumer Key
    2. Twitter Consumer Secret

    3. Copy and paste your Access Token and Access Token Secret into the fields below

On the right hand side of your application page, click on ‘My Access Token’.

    1. Access Token
    2. Access Token Secret

But on the Twitter Application page, only these exist:

    1. Consumer key
    2. Consumer secret
    3. Request token URL
    4. Access token URL
    5. Authorize URL

Twitter Consumer Key = Consumer key
Twitter Consumer Secret = Consumer secret

Access Token and Access Token Secret is under “My Access Token” (menu right above).

There is the Access Token and the Access Token Secret.

I activated it successfully on two WordPress installation. However it seems to me, that all is case sensitive. If something have upper-case letters, then you should also use it. The same for lower-case letters

Access Token and Access Token Secret is under “My Access Token” (menu right above).

This doesn’t exist. Not on my application page.

I deleted my app, recreated it four or five times, I’ve double checked, triple checked all tokens and secrets…and I’m still getting that damned “Authentication Failed. Please check your credentials and make sure Twitter is up and running” error.

It’s been three frustrating weeks now.

Make sure that your Twitter application is set to read and write.
