Support » Plugin: The Events Calendar » [Plugin: The Events Calendar] So sick of getting plugins where the author writes a bunch of markup

  • This applies to 99% of the plugin devs out there: YOU ARE NOT DESIGNERS.

Use the minimal amount of markup. Stop assuming everyone wants to use the same exact layout. Click on View All Events and it breaks my layout.

I’m going to do the crappy overwrite thing, but I’m gonna have to do that for almost all the templates, and it’s just annoying.

Hi, PressedCory. Thanks for the note here – we appreciate the feedback, and I’m sorry to hear you aren’t satisfied with the structure of the plugin. This was actually an intentional decision and was done largely for the reason that our user base is just as much non-technical users as it is developers (possibly more so). Since not everyone is a designer who can change it, the feedback we received is that people want something presentable from the get-go. We offer up the template override procedure as a simple way for the more dev-savvy, who are looking to go a different route, to have the flexibility they desire.

I realize that doesn’t make it any less annoying for you, but thought you’d be interested in hearing some of the thought process that went into this. Apologies we let you down on that end, though.

Why not do what PageNavi has done? Have the events calendar with minimal markup, then offer a separate plugin to add a myriad of styles to it? If you whittle down the markup to something usable, I’d help with styles.

Hey again PressedCory. I talked this over with our lead devs today, and it looks like you’ve mentioned this at the perfect time…as we already are rethinking how we do the views in our plugin, and we are indeed taking a much more minimalistic approach. While I can’t guarantee it’ll be the exact same approach as PageNavi, it is on the devs’ minds as well and something that you’ll likely see changed with 2.1 when that releases later this year.

Hope that helps and thanks again for the feedback. Let me know if you need anything else.
