Support » Plugin: Simple Page Sidebars » [Plugin: Simple Page Sidebars] sidebar plugin somehow connected to top navigation?

  • Resolved brittni

I have noooo idea how this happened.. lol.. but when I installed this plugin, it ended up connecting to the top navigation bar.. so now when I make menus, it changed the top navigation. 🙁

I downloaded this so I would be able to have a different menu, on the left side bar, on each page… (like when you click on a page.. on the left side it would display all its child pages)

but now I have no clue how to fix this.. I don’t really like having to change the menu in order to change my nav bar.. I really liked how it was pretty much automatic.. make a new page = navigation automatically gets added to the top.

please help me return it back to normal! and it would be a HUGE plus if it could get connected the correct way and just change the side bar menu.. :-p

  • Hi Brittni, that doesn’t sound like an issue related to this plugin. If you didn’t have any menus before, WordPress will automatically list all of your pages anywhere a menu should be.

What you need to do is create a menu for your top navigation and check the checkbox that says “Automatically add new top-level pages.” Be sure to assign that menu to the correct location. You may need to add all of your existing pages initially, but that should restore your top navigation.

Otherwise, if you don’t want to use the menu feature, you can delete your menus and search for a widget that will list child/sub pages.

ok, got one part figured out… I guess in my menu thing it shows something as ‘primary menu’… I have now figured out that the ‘primary menu’ is the navigation at the top!.. haha! ok.. so when I make that be the option thats blank.. it works normally again! YAY!

ok.. now I am trying to figure out how to work the sidebar…

so does this plugin do the sidebar/widget area?

Yes, it will allow you to create different sidebars for different pages. A theme typically has a default sidebar that displays on every page; you need to go to the Settings->Reading panel and select that sidebar in the “Default Sidebar” dropdown.

Now when you create or edit a page, you’ll have an option to choose which sidebar you want it to use (or create a new sidebar). If you create a new sidebar for a page, you can go to the Appearance->Widgets panel to find your new sidebar and add widgets to it.

I found it. sorry about that! I wasn’t sure what area was suppose to change…

for future reference, if anyone else is confused…

when you go into a page and do the ‘enter new’ option. type in the name you want to call the sidebar.. then click update..

THEN in the ‘widget’ area.. a NEW sidebar area appears… that you can put things into.. that is then what will appear on the page. 🙂

(I was thinking it was directly connected to the ‘menu’ area.. like I would make a new menu and it would appear as an option for the sidebar..)

Glad you got it figured out and I’ll try to work in some clearer instructions in a future release. Good luck with your site.

    – Brady
