Support » Plugin: Contact Form 7 Honeypot » Great Plugin

  • Judging from the lack of response to support issues in the forum, I believe this plugin is no longer being updated. It doesn’t work anymore and thus I could not recommend it to anyone else.

After further testing on another domain, it seems like everything is working properly now, so if there was some problem it has been fixed. I hate Captchas and appreciate having this alternative.

Plugin is still supported, and updates performed as required to keep it functioning as intended. I haven’t replied to your posts Dick, as I’m not sure what comment I can offer — you’re not really asking questions, just saying “doesn’t work”. The plugin is a honeypot plugin — if your form is spammed by a person or a bot that knows how to beat a honeypot, then there’s not much this plugin can do for that. You would need a more comprehensive span prevention system, including probably the more intrusive, but harder to beat CAPTCHAs.

At the end of the day, the plugin is what it says on the box, and still works as intended. Sorry it’s not useful to you.

Thanks for your reply. I really am glad to know you are there and willing to try and fix the plugin if there is a problem. I hate Captchas and will not use them.

I manage about 50 WordPress websites all running on the same server with the latest version of WordPress and when I updated one of them (a low traffic site) to the latest versions of CF7 and Honeypot, we all of a sudden saw tons of spam. Since it was just that one website it sure looks like some kind of problem, either a change in CF7 or a change in Honeypot that caused it to quit working. I have not updated the other sites and they are not getting spammed, so I don’t believe it has anything to do with the spammers figuring it out.

There also seem to be other users reporting the same problems after recent updates.

As a test, I am going to update CF7 and Honeypot right now on another site with lots of traffic and see what happens. I’ll let you know.

If you’re able, save the HTML code for the form (load the page, view source, copy and paste to text file). Then compare it to the form when you upgrade. That will show you exactly what’s changed pre/post upgrade.

I did the update and tested it by using Chrome inspector to unhide the honeypot field. It failed validation, so it does seem to work. I should have done that test before I posted the review. I am going to revise my review, since I don’t know any way to remove it.

Cheers Dick. If you notice another spike in spam, open up a new forum post and myself and (hopefully) the community can dig in and see if there’s some way to stop it.
