Sorry if this has been asked before (didn't find it in the first few pages of the forum), but are there any plans for podPress to support HTML5's audio tag and optionally avoid using Flash at all?

Yes. The upcoming version of podPress is going to use the HTML5 <audio> tag for mp3, ogg and ogv (<video>) files and it is planned to expand this to other file types too. But at the moment the not all browsers support all file types. That is why podPress will embed MP3 files only in browsers with the WebKit layout 525.x (modern versions of e.g. Safari, Chrome) or newer and OGG files only in modern of the FireFox (Gecko 1.9.1) and Opera (Presto 2.5) browser.
Until something changes podPress will show the Flash player (for MP3 files) in all non-WebKit browsers (or browsers with an older WebKit engine).

You may try the current Development Version (8.8.10 RC 18).

Notice: This Development Version (and all following versions) will modify some podPress meta data in the db which makes it difficult to downgrade. (podPress renames the meta_keys of the podPress post meta information. podPressMedia becomes _podPressMedia and podPressPostSpecific becomes _podPressPostSpecific.)
I would appreciate it if you could test this version. But please make a backup of the db of your blog first.
