    The Online Backup For WordPress is timing out after several hours. The back starts, indicates it is saving files, then states: A timeout occurred during backup (large files and slow servers are the common cause of this); trying again…

    I did not have this issue prior to upgrading to WP 3.2.1. I have no video files on my WP site.

    Hi pholleman,

    Can you provide the backup log for the activity that times out. This will help us find at which point the timeout is happening.

    Click Activity Log and find the timeout activity and click View Events. Just post it here.

    Hi pholleman,

    This is a known issue. Seems to be quite rare but now and again the database just won’t backup with the plugin using default settings. We’re currently improving this for the next release.

    If you go to General Settings and then edit the URL in your browser’s address bar, at the end of the URL will be “section=settings”, change this to “section=advanced” and press enter.

    On this page, find dump_segment_size and tick the checkbox, then change the value from 200 to 50. Save the settings and try a backup.

    This works in 90% of cases, if it doesn’t let me know – we need to edit the plugin to make it lower.

    Hi! This plug in used to work great for me, but suddenly stopped. Now my scheduled back ups AND manual back ups time out. I see the following as typical in the activity log:

    A database operation failed.
    Please try reinstalling the plugin – in most cases this will repair the database.
    Please contact support if the issue persists, providing the complete event log for the activity. Error information follows:
    Location: 862:/home7/splbetao/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wponlinebackup/include/files.php
    Message: WPDB error: Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation ‘=’. Last query: UPDATE wp_wponlinebackup_items SET new_file_size = 13532, new_mod_time = 1308799296, backup = IF(exists IS NULL OR file_size != new_file_size OR mod_time != new_mod_time, 1, 0) WHERE bin = 2 AND parent_id = 160 AND type = 1 AND name = ‘_iw_search_search.php_query=caf?&start=81&search=1&results=10&type=and’

    Does this shed any light? All help is appreciated!

    Hi RobinGardella,

    This is a known issue with some servers and UTF-8 files. We’re working on a fix at the moment.

    If you want to try something, you could enter phpMyAdmin and go to the wp_wponlinebackup_items table, and edit the name field and change the collation/character set to “utf8_general_ci”.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi FireDaily,

    Could you try again with the filesystem backup excluded?
    Please also open a separate forum post regarding your issue, and post the full completed event log, and what the completion status was, “Timed out” / “Unexpected Stop” / “Successful” etc.

    This also helped for me, thank you very much Driskell. The plugin is great.

    I encountered that “Timed out” problem and found this thread.

    Are there any other solutions to the timeout issue? I set the dump segment size to 50, but it times out every single time.

    Here’s the event file:

    Hi hidohebhi,

    Your issue appears to be different as the event log shows your backup finishes and gets to the transmission / preparation stage. Can you post your issue and event log in a new topic and let us know what kind of backup you were running, such as to email or to online or if it was a download backup?

    It will be best in a new topic as it is different to this issue and it will help people find it if they have the same issue. Not to mention this issue was marked resolved a while ago.
