[Plugin: Online Backup for WordPress] Manual backup failing due to timeout error

  • I have just downloaded, installed and configured ‘Online Backup’ and to see how it went I attempted a manual backup. I selected backup of both the Database and the Filesystem. I chose to email the back-up. Encryption has been set. However once the backup procedure was set in train it proceeded quite rapidly through to a point 71% the way through the procedure. It then remained at that point for many minutes and finally reported a time out error. The full wording of the note in the Event Log is as follows: “The backup timed out too many times and no progress was made on any attempt. Your server may be running extremely slow at this time – try scheduling the backup during a quieter period.” I’ve tried it twice now without success. The first run took 12minutes to time out and the second took 1 hour 30 mins.

    Hi dionweston,

Can you go to Activity Log in the plugin, then click View Events on the timed out activity and post the event log you see.

It could be when we passed the data to the emailer it didn’t return or crashed. This can cause the time out, and the most common cause is the backup is too big to send via email. How big is your blog, do you know?

    Regards,

    Jason.

    Hi Driskell,

    Hi dionwestern,

If you do a manual download backup, does that work, and are you able to download it successfully?

Also, do you know the size of your blog?

    Jason.

Having a similar problem with manual backup. First tried email backup because I could not initially get the plugin to connect with online vault. Monitor showed it quickly processed 76% of the backup (though still showed 0 files, 0 MB) then stalled. after nearly an hour I stopped the backup. By then I’d gotten the plugin connected to the online vault, so I tried online backup. Quickly went to 85% done, then stalled again. Been at 85% for over an hour now. My blog is not that big. It’s mostly a static site, with about 6 pages and less than a dozen posts.

On this latest attempt it does tell me the size. after an hour, 85% processed. Says ” Transmitting the backup files to the server… (0 B of 17.6 MiB transferred so far).

    Hi,

When it sat on the Transmitting message for several hours, was it Sunday or early Monday morning? I’m guessing so by the time you posted.

Last week the load was unusually high. This will be the issue you hit. The spike was significantly larger than predicted. Demand for the plugin seems to have exploded.

We pushed through some server updates during the week and this morning the load was back to normal levels. The rest of the planned updates to improve capacity will be happening this week and we’ve acquired some new servers which will go live this week also.

So everything should function normally now! Let us know if not.

    Thanks,

    Jason

    Hi Michael_onSaba,

Just to add – if you do still need help, please can you raise a new topic?
This one was quite an old one and related to something different.

    Thanks,

    Jason
