    Hi Mark,

Did you download the backup when you generated it? Was it a full backup or an incremental backup? The backup.zip.php is a temporary file containing temporary backup data and can only be read by the plugin. To get the backup file itself you need to have downloaded it using the plugin when the backup finished, or if it was an online backup it will be stored on our servers.

You might be able to try and see what temporary data is still in that file but it won’t be simple. You’ll need to strip a specific number of bytes from the beginning of the file so the file starts with the letters PK and it should become a ZIP file – but as to whether the contents are complete or even readable I don’t know as it varies what sits in the file – this is all assuming the backup had completed perfectly and was awaiting download but never was downloaded. The exact number of bytes varies from platform to platform so I wouldn’t be able to say.

    Jason.

Yes I downloaded the backup when I generated it. It was a full backup. I also thinking I did an online backup that is stored on your severs too.

If you downloaded when you generated it you should have a ZIP extension so use that file and just unzip it (open it). It looks like you went in via FTP though and downloaded a different file as that’s the only way you’d get a PHP extension, and this is not how you download a backup file and my above warnings about integrity andnusabili apply and the only way to read anything from it is to strip the first few bytes up until “PK”. I can’t offer much more help than that I’m afraid.

You may be better of logging into our server for the online backup and generating a snapshot to download. This will at least be reliable.

great! thanks. now to do a snapshot to download?

    thanks again

ok so I downloaded successfully a snapshot. now if you’d be so kind, how do I upload this download into my existing directory on our server to recover what was lost and restore our site back.

    thanks

    Hi Mark,

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and you will have two folders, “Database” and “Filesystem”. This will be all you need to restore the backup. You’ll find some simple instructions on our FAQ at https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/FAQ. Beyond this is outside of our support as we just provide the backup of the data.

    Jason.
