Thanks for reaching out @takingroot and for the kind words about the plugin. I’m sorry to hear you’re running into issues. Unfortunately, reminder emails not going out can be caused by a number of things. Would you mind answering a few questions which will help me to better figure out what’s going on:

    1. Are you able to send a custom email to the volunteers without a problem? You can do this from each opportunity’s edit screen.
    2. Is the opportunity that’s not sending emails a one-time volunteer opportunity with a fixed date and time? The system will only send automated reminders if it is, since for flexible opportunities it doesn’t know when the opportunity will take place.
    3. Is the setting “Number of Days Prior to Opportunity to Send Reminder” set to an integer (4,3,2,etc.) and when you created the opportunity was it farther in the future than that amount? If you set the emails to send 4 days before the opportunity, but opportunity takes place in 2 days when created it won’t send.
    4. Who is your web hosting provider? Some examples would be Bluehost, GoDaddy and Network Solutions.

Thanks for providing us some more details. That will definitely help us figure out what’s going on.

When I try to send a custom email I get the following error “Error sending the email. Try again later.”

The opportunity is a one time event with a fixed date and time and the number of days to send reminders prior to the event (which is in late February) is set to 4.

The website is hosted on a server here in the office.

Let me know if you have additional questions and thank you for the quick response

Thanks for all the information. It’s possible your server is blocking the emails from going out. A lot of servers do that to prevent spam or mass emails from being sent. Do you have anyone internally who can check and see if that’s the case?

Also, if try to avoid using the words “test” or “testing” in the subject line or body. We’ve also seen servers block emails that include those words.

Finally, if that doesn’t work I’d suggest looking into a tool like Mandrill to send your website emails. You can couple a plugin like WP Mail SMTP with Mandrill to start sending emails from their service instead of through your internal web server.

Let me know what you find out and if you have any other questions.

Since we haven’t heard back in a week or so I’ll go ahead and mark this as resolved. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions or want to pick up the conversation again.

I am still working on a solution, the issue is NOT resolved. Our IT guy is only here one day a week so it may take some time. Thank You for your patience.

Thanks for letting us know @takingroot. Once IT has had a chance to look at it let us know if you have any more questions.

It has quit responding to my inquiries so I guess that means they don’t have a clue. Is there a way to link with a gmail address so I can send confirmations from there?

I installed the WP Mail SMTP plugin and was able to link with my gmail account. Email is now working! For what it’s worth here’s a walk though:

    Set up WP Mail STMP
    From Email: Your Gmail Address
Mailer: Send all WordPress emails via SMTP.
    STMP Host: smtp.gmail.com
    STMP Port: 465
    Encryption SSL
    Authentification: Yes
    User Name: Your Gmail Address

Once that is completed you will need to log into your google account and turn on less secure Apps. (i’m not sure if there are any serious ramifications to this but it won’t work otherwise) Link is below:

It’s great to hear you got it working @takingroot. It is possible that hooking up your Gmail account directly may cause some issues depending on how many emails you’re sending.

I’d suggest using a transactional email service to send the emails from your site. At this point we recommend SendGrid who offers 12,000 free emails a month and also has a WordPress plugin that’s free and easy to set up.

Thanks a ton for sharing your Gmail setup. That will be a great resource if folks want to take that approach in the future.

I would say I will not be sending more than 300-500 emails per month. Hopefully that will not be an issue. Thanks for the links.

Great. Please let us know if you have any other questions as you’re using the plugin. Also, since the plugin is so new it would be great if you could provide an honest review at https://wordpress.org/support/view/plugin-reviews/wired-impact-volunteer-management. Thanks!
