• First, let me apologize if this is a redundant thread. I’ve looked through a dozen other threads, but none mimic my issue or have any suggested solution.

When I upload an image and have it generate a thumbnail, the ‘Create new thumbnails’ window pops up with the status bar denoting how far along the thumbnail generation is. Then the status bar disappears and the windows just sits there with the ‘Create new thumbnails’ message. Nothing else happens – no errors occur. I have to manually exit the window.

Now I’m looking at my gallery and there are no thumbnails next to the items. The thumbnail column is simply empty. I can click on the individual item and click ‘Edit thumb’ and the proper image shows up with the cropping tool. I crop and click ‘Update’ and it says ‘Thumbnail updated’. I then exit that window and there’s still no thumbnail in the thumbnail column. The actual thumbnails do no show on the webpage either; however, the slider works perfectly.

I’ve tried changing all of the settings for the thumbnails in the options. I have nextGEN Gallery fully up-to-date (1.7.3 as of 1/24/11). I’ve tested on Chrome, Firefox 3.6 & 4, IE8 & 9, and haven’t had any luck with the thumbnails working. It is important to note that the very first time I installed nextGEN Gallery that the thumbnails did work. I ended up deleted the aforementioned gallery and haven’t had luck getting thumbnails to work since. I’ve reinstalled the plugin as well. I’m using the Green Stimulus theme… maybe there are compatibility issues?

I eagerly await your opinion on this issue. Thank you.

Same here, think it has to do with image size…

    I updated from 5 to 7. And:
    The plugin doesn’t generate thumbnails.
The tabs in the admin-pages don’t work anymore. (So all settings and functions on all NextGen-pages are on one page.)
The homepage of NextGen shows under “Latest News” and “Related plugins” the text “loading” and nothing loads.

Just commenting to say I have the same issue!

I resolved the problem and it was NOT a bug in NextGen.
I had a function in a jQuery file that called another jQuery function that did not exist. WordPress as a whole goes wrong than. Only you don’t notice that in all admin-pages or plugin pages.
So check the NextGen admin pages with your Error Console in Safari, Chrome or Firefox and see if that shows a Javascript error.

erwin.odendaal, how check it? Please… Where is jQuery?

It must be a file that you yourself has made, so you’ll know where it is.
Ceck the NextGen admin pages with your Error Console in Safari, Chrome or use Firebug in Firefox and see if that shows a Javascript error. Behind the error will always be a url to the file which generates the error.

I solved disabling some plugin, not one in particular…

    Hello all

I had exactly the same problem. As martinfeeney suggested it might be image size, I used Photoshop to reduce the image to width:500px and height:333px and then -yippee!- it worked!

I haven’t experimented to see what is the maximum width/height combo but can safely say this worked for me.

I didn’t touch any jquery or other plugins.

    P.S. I am using WordPress 3.1 and NextGen 1.7.4

    Hope this helps.

Yeah. I have the same thing going on myself. I’ll try resizing the images before uploading and see if that helps.
Is anyone able to provide the suggested images size limits for the thumbnails to work? Thanks.

I’ve tried resizing images (seems pointless if you want to show high resolution photos though), adjusting the memory by hacking the gd.thumbnail.inc.php file, and by disabling all plugins – nothing has worked for me. This plugin is VERY buggy, and there’s no rhyme or reason to when it works. I wish it would have stopped working earlier for me so I wouldn’t have invested so much time getting my galleries in there. Now I can’t add new images to them without a million workarounds.

    I don’t know if this would apply in many cases, however, I had the same problem. I did just about everything mentioned above and nothing. It was only when looking at Options > Thumbnails that I saw this;

Please note : If you change the settings, you need to recreate the thumbnails under -> Manage Gallery .

I thought to myself, ‘I can recreate thumbnails?’ Anyway, I went back to Manage > Gallery, selected all the images in one of my galleries, and chose “Create new thumbnails” under Bulk Actions. Although the thumbnail status bar completed at 100%, it just hung there and wouldn’t close – I had to close it manually. Then, I selected “Save Changes” and, as if by magic, my thumbnails appeared. No idea why, they just did.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Thanks Mdrawdy.. worked a treat..

It does not do the trick for me 🙁
