I’m having a bit of difficulty making this plug-in behave as it did when I tested it a while back (before the release of WP3.1).

Previously I managed to make it so that all new registered users were automatically added to all sites on the network as subscribers… for some reason, now they only get added as subscribers to the other sub-sites, but not the top level website.

It appears there’s a menu option missing in the Network Admin > Settings page which allows the default subscriber role to be selected, as I seem to remember previously? Does the plug-in need an update for 3.1 or am I missing something? Any help/advice would be great!

Thanks for the quick response thenbrent, really appreciated. It would be great to see this working as it was before, great work on a great plug-in.

Hi thenbrent – did you find any issues with 3.1 in the end?

The default behaviour in 3.1 has changed. According to the Codex Network article:

all users who are added to your network will have subscriber access to all sites on your network

So if you want all users to receive a subscriber role, then you don’t need this plugin anymore.

Mmm – I’ve noticed that they’ve said this, but unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be the case, any interrogations by role don’t flag those users as subscribers for each site – and they’re not listed on the individual blog user lists as subscribers (which your plug-in does do) – I don’t know if this is a fault with my installation of 3.1, or something I’m missing in the set-up of 3.1, but I do think your plug-in is still of use going forward.

I think the key here is that they say ‘subscriber access’ but the user isn’t actually registered as a subscriber for the individual site, which is different. Any test accounts I set-up add the user to the network users list, but they still have to be manually added to each site within the network.

    Any thoughts?

I just did a bit of my own testing and right you are. By giving “subscriber access” the user is not actually assigned any role for any site… not even the dashboard site.

The good news is it’s a relatively quick fix to have MSUM operate on the dashboard site also.

Can you please download and test this beta version: https://github.com/thenbrent/multisite-user-management/zipball/master

You are a legend – just tested the beta and works like a charm 🙂

I don’t know what WordPress are thinking with the pseudo subscriber access… it doesn’t make much sense really, especially as so many plug-ins reference the users role rather then capabilities, and the pseudo users only being visible by the network admin…

Anyway, I can’t thank you enough, hopefully this has been helpful for your development as well… the plug-in still serves a VERY useful purpose 🙂
