[Plugin: Media Tags] request: search by multiple media tags

  • I love Media Tags. The one thing we still need, though, is a way to select on multiple tags. At one site, I have a library of over 500 images. Some are specially sized for page headers, others specially sized for home page boxes, the rest are for spot images. They are tagged with special sizing (e.g., “home-header”) and with topics (e.g., “valley scenic”). It would save so much time to look for the set of images that match both of those two tags.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

@mcdonna. How are you performing the search? You didn’t specific if this was to be used in the admin area trying to located image or via the shortcode or template functions.

When using the shortcodes and/or template function there are two key parameters to use:

media_tags – Use this to defined the media-tags you are searching for. For example.
    media_tags=”something1,something2″

tags_compare – Use this to tell the ‘media_tags’ how the items should be compare. Values are ‘OR’ and ‘AND’. Default is ‘OR’.

Sorry to be unclear, Paul, and thanks very much for your reply.

Unfortunately it is the former. The people maintaining the site need to swap out images for fresh ones periodically. They are searching the media library from inside the “edit post” context.

@mcdonna, Unfortunately that is mostly controlled by WordPress core. But I will give it some thinking. Might come up with something. Thanks for the tip.

So just to be clear. If I’m on the ‘Media Library’ tab of the popup. I might be able to add an additional search option.

Or if you choose the “Media Tags” tab of the popup, offer an input box where someone could type a list of tags? Or check multiple boxes? Thanks for considering it! 🙂

    Hi Paul,

Sorry if my question is in the wrong post. I’m very new at this.

Your plugin works just fine, but the thing is I need to search / filter any media tag in my front page: http://www.casasdemexico.net/content/

I want to be able to filter “bathrooms”, “terraces”, etc. within each post from our projects.

I already tried “Media Tags Widget” but it only shows posts one tag at a time.

    Can you help?

    Thank you for your time.

jonasiano, probably your first lesson is to not hijack some else’s question. This gets confusing because your needs and the original poster’s needs are quite different. It is always bets to start a new thread.

As to your question you might be confused on how Media-Tags works. The Media-Tags plugin simply applied tagging ability to your image. This has little to do with the Posts that an image/document/media would be associated with.

For example if you want to show a list of all images tagged as ‘Vacation’ in a widget of a custom Page template there are some template functions available for Media-Tags that will help.

First lesson learned, Paul. Thank you for your help. Going to look for those template functions.
