    Basically, I was struggling to get jetpack to install or upgrade automatically. It seemed to start becoming an issue after the latest wordpress upgrade. Looking into the issue was showing that the jetpack update would download, but never finishing unpacking.

    If anyone else is having the same issue, then putting this in wp-settings.php (on line 25) sorted it:

    // Set initial default constants including WP_MEMORY_LIMIT, WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT, WP_DEBUG, WP_CONTENT_DIR and WP_CACHE.
    if ( !defined('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT') )  //ADD THIS LINE
    define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M');   //ADD THIS LINE TOO...
    wp_initial_constants( );

    Information was found here:

    it turns out that fix wasn't the problem, and it worked due to a fluke! It turns out that the maximum allowed time a php functino was allowed to take was 30 seconds. This seems to include the time it takes to download a file as part of that function. Setting the time too low for the download results in a visible error message, however, if the file is unpacking while this limit is reached, no obvious error message is shown. For some reason, downloads to our server are working slowly from wordpress currently, so it was hitting the limit during unpack (currently it's limited to 30 seconds). Upping this limit fixed the error.

    in php.ini
    max_execution_time = 30
