[Plugin: Jetpack by WordPress.com] Jetpack slowing my server to a crawl and it refuses to deactivate

I made the huge mistake if installing Jetpack last night. It’s reduced my server to a crawl and refuses to deactivate despite my constant clicking on the deactivate link from the plug-in list. Has anyone else experienced this? I guess my only choice to delete the actual files, but I’m worried that will cause errors to start on the site because I can’t seem to get the subscribe widget to go away either.
