 * I’m considering using a plugin “Frontend uploader” which allows anyone to upload
a photo to my website without even having to enter a password.

 * I have tried it out and it works well and uploads photos to a special directory
within the Media directory for moderation before being published.
 * I have deactivated the plugin for now however until I can settle my concerns
about viruses and malware. I assume allowing such up-loads opens up my site to
all kinds of threats. Should I also install a virus checking plugin and will
such a plugin check photos being uploaded for malicious content? Are there other
security options other than via plugins?
