  • Greetings All

I’m editing a Title that uses flat apostrophes and flat quote marks, entered via direct keystrokes. When I save and view, they’re displayed properly as “smart” or “curly” punctuation. (Not sure these will display as intended here.)

1st Edit, content in edit box: Let's see how "straight quotes" and apostrophes morph in titles.
1st View: Let’s see how “straight quotes” and apostrophes morph in titles.

On a subsequent edit, these characters appear in the edit box as HTML entities. (Subtract the hyphens below.)

2nd Edit: Let&-#-039;s see how &-quot;straight quotes&-quot; and apostrophes morph in titles.

Once saved, they’ll display as less desirable flat punctuation:

2nd View: Let's see how "straight quotes" and apostrophes morph in titles.

On third edit, the ampersand itself becomes an HTML entity:

3rd Edit: Let&-amp;#-039;s see how &-amp;quot;straight quotes&-amp;quot; and apostrophes morph in titles.

And on third save, HTML entities become visible to the viewer:

3rd View: Let&-#-039;s see how &-quot;straight quotes&-quot; and apostrophes morph in titles.
Nth View: Let&-amp;amp;amp;#-039;s see how &-amp;amp;amp;quot;straight quotes&-amp;amp;amp;quot; and apostrophes morph in titles.

A good workaround is to select and copy the first good “curly quote” rendition of the title, and paste it into the edit box. Punctuation entered that way will remain intact.

Working in Instant WordPress; theme is Atahualpa, but experiencing the same behavior in Twenty Eleven.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

    Jerome
