hey @carbeck 🙂 could you explain this in a bit more detail?

Mh, I don’t actually know if File Gallery would be the right plugin to do that. The thing is, with WordPress’s Media Library frontend you can only get files into the database that you upload, but not e.g. links to Youtube videos, so there’s no out-of-the-box way to get those displayed in listings created by File Gallery.

Actually, searching further after writing that comment above, I found http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/add-youtube-video-to-media-library/, however the way it’s coded it only provides the queries to get links to Youtube videos into WordPress’s database. However, it looks like you can put any link into wp_posts and have it registered for native use with your WP installation, since the field that saves the reference to the file/post/whatever (wp_posts.guid) uses the absolute URL to the element.

But as I said, I don’t know if there shouldn’t rather be a separate, dedicated plugin for storing links to offsite media in the Media Library.

(For an illustration of a FG-created list that lists a link to a Youtube video like any other media content from the website proper, see http://benung.nfshost.com/archives/media-tag/2012 — as soon as the link is in the database, you can tag it like anything else and have it listed by FG.)
