[Resolved] [Plugin: EWWW Image Optimizer] Installing from the standard repositories

  • “If you have root access to your server, you can install optipng from the standard repositories.”

I have access to the root user of my computer, and I’m able to ftp into my website through filezilla. My hosting company is dreamhost.

When “If you have root access to your server…” is mentioned, does that mean the root user of my computer, or the root directory of my account at dreamhost.com?

I’m at a loss with what “install optipng from the standard repositories” actually means.

Can someone just get me started? I should be able to take it from there after I know the first three steps or so of what to do.

    Thanks!

    my website is http://www.bostondavisbostian.com/.

I’m referring to the ‘root’ user of the server. Either you can login as root (which I wouldn’t advertise), or you can use sudo or su, and actually install stuff on your server (typically only in dedicated server setups).

To my knowledge, dreamhost runs debian, so you ought to be able to try something like this:
    apt-get install optipng

If they don’t allow you to install packages via apt-get or aptitude, you would need to compile/install it from source using the directions in the Installation section: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/installation/
With root access, you would also be able to run the ‘make install’ command after running ‘make’ so that it would install the compiled binaries in the normal system locations.
