My hosting support came back to me with the following – The function this plugin want’s to use is exec, this is disabled by default and will remain so as this function contains a serious glitch that allows hackers to gain access to the root server via the php exec function. Therefore your plugin won’t work which is why you’re seeing this error, upon reading the logs and hundreds of articles around this matter I am unable to find a work around for that using this plugin.
The plugin is simply not secure and would put the overall server at risk, something we aren’t going to risk.
Is there any light at the end of the tunnel for this? Totally gutted I am unable to use your plugin.

Unfortunately, the only option is to switch to a better webhost that allows exec. It is absolutely impossible to perform the optimizations that we do without exec, sorry.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.
I have some sites on other hosting so fingers crossed will give it a go on those.
