    Created a site a few years ago and used this plugin. I have updated WP plus the plugin but getting an error on line 5 of the php file

    <div id="sidebar" class="span-6">
    <div id="sidebar-top"></div>

      <?php if (is_page('events')) {
      dbem_get_calendar();
      echo "<div>Select a date to view events on that day</div>";
      } else { ?>

      Any suggestions as to how I should fix it?

    you can try to use do_shortcode e.g. do_shortcode('[events_calendar long_events=1]')

    I tried this and the error went away. The problem is that the calendar still isn't showing up.

    you probably want to use this instead

    echo EM_Calendar::output(array('long_events'=>1));

    i think you're missing an echo before angelo's suggestion
