That’s not a plugin issue. Sounds like it’s a hosting/server problem.
I deactivated the eShop translation plugin, thinking that maybe… but no luck. Still get the “Directory access denied”. Which directory?

sounds like it might be a php sessions issue, try contacting your webhosts about it.
Yes, I did and got that:
That isn’t very helpful, since they just toss it out there like a shotgun approach to possible issues (and I’m not sure how an access denied message would fit in with sessions). There is no particular issue with sessions on the server – if there were, you wouldn’t actually be able to hang on to a wordpress login session (like in the admin area), as a lack of a session identifier would result in a continual need to log in, looping as there would be no session data for the authentication routine. Did you check with the developer of the plugin itself, rather than at the wordpress forums?
to which I replied :
Thanks, well, yes, I checked with the developer, but they seem to be more interested in making sure that their plugin is not seen as the cause of the problem, rather than in helping their users. I guess i’ll have to find another solution.
It seems hard to believe that I’d be the first use4 to face that problem…

I also like how they say they are not to blame, anyway lets go back to basics and start afresh.
Firstly deactivate all other plugins, and change your theme to 2010(preferably), or 2011.
Test again, does it work ok now?
If not, a link to a product on your site please.
All plugins deactivated, 2010 theme activated : same problem “Access to directory denied”

according to the link above you moved the site from a sub folder at some point?

on your checkout page you get this:
Paiement
Accès au dossier interdit
Looking at the French translation helped me find this, your checkout page is messed up, I would suggest trying a new one, and updating the eShop settings to match – all that needs to be on there is the shortcode. However, it could be an indicator of larger issues, so really you should uninstall eShop and then install a fresh version. This would cause all data to be lost, so make sure you have backups before you start.
Thanks for your suggestions. I checked the Checkout page and there was nothing in it except the shortcode. I created a new one and updated the eshop settings. I checked the new page before adding the shortcode and it was available, but as soon as I added the shortcode I got the “Access to directory denied”. I don’t know whether this info is helpfull or not. I will now proceed to install a fresh version of eShop, and let you know when it is done. For testing I will also deactivate the eShop translation.

that does make it sound like when you moved files a file permission was not set correctly – but at the same time, that error should never turn up anyway.
So hopefully starting from scratch again will resolve it.
It did. Everything is fine now, thanks for your help. One thing, though:
when you moved files a file permission was not set correctly
I had moved the site from the subfolder PRIOR to installing eShop…
I’ll keep checking it.

ahh, well that is strange, but it could still mean an issue with file permissions if you hadn’t set up the wp-content directory correctly.
