Hi, I installed and activated the Duplicator plugin and then clicked on the link to check “server compatibility”. Everything was ok except for the message “Open Base Dir: On – Fail“. My question is what does this mean ? Does it mean that I cannot run Duplicator on my current shared hosting server or does it mean that one or more features of Duplicator will not work and if so which features ?

    Many Thanks

    Phil 🙂

Hi, Yes I read that FAQ originally, but it was quite vague and did not answer my query which is why I asked the question.

What I would like to know is what features of Duplicator do not work when the open-basedir resriction is in place ? My host, like others who operate shared hosting environments configure their systems a particular way to suit their purposes and will not make changes to suit mine. And I guess lots of people encounter this problem. Your FAQ Answer is not particuarly informative or helpful.

I ran the plugin and it seems to have performed the site and DB backup just fine, so what is the problem with “Open Base Dir: On – Fail” ?

    Thanks

While I’m not the plugin author, the message would seem to indicate that the plugin pre-install check routine may simply be alerting you to the fact that the open base directory restriction in PHP, has been enabled in your hosting environment.

In a nutshell, it limits file access by php scripts to a designated directory. It’s completely possible that in your case, “Open Base Dir: On – Fail” is nothing more that a warning message from the plugin that Open Base Dir is “turned on” in php on your host – especially if you haven’t actually encountered the “open_basedir restriction in effect” message while using the plugin. It may not be an issue at all.

That’s just my best-guess, mind you, but I’m sure the plugin author can give you a better answer. You might be able to get a quicker response from them by contacting support on their site.

    Good luck to you!

Hi Clayton, Many Thanks for your answer and I am sorry I assumed that you were the plugin author.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

No problem… I should have mentioned I wasn’t the author when I commented. Good luck!

Yes Clayton is 100% correct. Thanks Clayton!

System requirements are a must for the plugin to work, while the System Checks help guide the stability of the plugin with your server setup. The plugin has worked on some setups with Open Base Dir enabled, however it has also had many issues on some servers with it enabled. I’ll update the docs to be more descriptive of this fact.

    Hope this helps!

i am having this same issue and my host says that they will not try to make it off so my question is how can i resolve Open Base Dir: On Fail issue in the duplicator plugin

    Hey infoistan,

If your host won’t allow you to disable the directive then there isn’t much you can do except switch hosts. However on some hosts the directive doesn’t inter-fear with the package creation process. I would give it a try and see if it works.

    Cheers~
