Akismet plugin has deactivated due to an error, on several of my websites. I tried to reinstall but it says the folder already exists.

    Please advise.
    thank you

If uninstalling Akismet via the Plugins page doesn’t work, you’ll need to manually remove the akismet/ folder from your wp-content/plugins/ folder. If you’re not comfortable doing this, your hosting company should be able to assist you.

Thank you. Going to the server files to delete the folder is exactly what I ended up doing.
All is well now. It is curious as to why this happened in the first place, though.

    thanks again.

I would be interested in knowing what triggered it as well. If Akismet works fine after reinstalling, it could have been a failed update where only some of the files got updated. Let me know if you find anything out.

That could have been why I suppose. The error message was that, ‘the plugin does not have a valid header’.

I update plugins, WP, Themes on a weekly basis of 25 sites. All have the Akismet plugin. Of the 5 sites that this happened to there wasn’t really anything that they all have in common except the hosting company. I looked for some commonality but that was all I found.

Sorry I can’t be of more help with that. It remains a mystery.

    Thanks, I appreciate the info.

Wow, yet another Automattic plugin issue for me. The site is: Same problem as OP, but even though I’ve deleted the plugin folder, the doesn’t think so. No other plugins has given me so many problems and so consistently. In the last few months, nearly every time WordPress updates, I invariably have issues with either Akismet and/or Jetpack.

This time, it’s caused problems on at least one of my sites (I have to check the rest). Here’s the error from the admin page:

Warning: include_once(/home/content/a2pewpnaspod04_data03/50/41202550/html/wp-content/plugins/akismet/akismet.php): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/content/a2pewpnaspod04_data03/50/41202550/html/wp-settings.php on line 305

The worst part is, as I had mentioned, even though I’ve FTP’d to the folder and deleted it, it won’t let me try to reinstall it so I can delete it properly and get rid of it:

Installation failed: Destination folder already exists.

Very frustrating. At this point, I’d like to uninstall all your products from all my web sites (I have about 20), but I need to get Akismet to realise it’s no longer in its folder. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Same issue on More to check now…
