[Plugin: Contact Form 7] contact form 7 issue

I am either having a brain fart or I am just inexperienced. I am starting a new site and I installed contact form 7. I pasted the [contact-form-7 id=”5″ title=”Contact form 1″] line in my wp page. In my php I have a line <?php the_content(); ?> which in other pages draws in the contact form but I am getting nothing. I get my custom theme but no form. Did I miss something? I checked the documentation but it is vague at best for people creating custom themes. Although I am new to wordpress and maybe I don’t know how to read the documentation. I did create a site, my first one using wordpress, using the steps I described with success. Any help is appreciated.
