If I misspelled a word, the editor would underline it, but it offered no choices for correct spellings when the underlined word was right clicked. Didn’t use it long enough to asses the other features.

Did you use SCAYT (spellchecker) ? This is the icon with ‘ABC’ string.
Please look at “Advanced Options” in CKEditor plugin configuration. Do you see any errors in Firebug (Firefox add-on) console ? You can also check in Firebug’s Net tab if all request are correct.
Which version of plugin do you use ?
