Here’s what I’m not understanding – I have a link to something that doesn’t exist which should trigger the 404 error process – but wait! There is a 404.php that has been customized for this site so I get this nicely formatted page that uses my theme and politely says:
Apologies, but the item you requested could not be found. Perhaps searching will help.
So is a 404 error REALLY occurring – because I’m being directed to a page that DOES exist?
The reason I’m asking is that I have a page with a link that I KNOW is broken and when I click on it, I am sent to the custom page. But when I try to use plugins to find broken links, this link doesn’t show up.
I need to go through the site and find which links are sending people to this custom page and actually fix the problems.
I’m soooo confused…. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
