  • Resolved EWord1

I loaded WP Security to my site this afternoon.
I made a backup (no idea how to apply it)

I started going through the findings and checking things. Not halfway through with the checklist, my site began to not load pages. Now I cannot log in to the back end.

The front-end error message is, “Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
    Apache Server at Port 80″

What I’ve tried to recover my site
    – I tried to rename the theme folder to no avail.
    – I then deleted the amended WP Security .htaccess file and replaced it with my original .htaccess file. Still no website.
    – I then renamed the plugins folder via ftp
    – Accessed my site-plugins via backend
    – My site, less key features (plug-ins)appeared to be up again.
    – Attempted to activate Better WP-Security (so I could send a support ticket per the authors install video) and Akismet plugin
    – My site has crashed again.

In his install video, the author of this plugin says to click on support to go to his website for support as he does NOT monitor forums.

This is also stated on his website.

On another part of his website, he then states that he does not support support emails and only checks support topics on The author also states he is not responsible for any problems his plugin may cause.

I have a problem and I need some help please.

At this point, my site has crashed, contacting the author seems like going in circles and I don’t have a solve for this.

  • Ditto, man. How does this plugin have so many stars?! It wreaks havoc. Deleting the admin user? Really? Good job, guys!

What feature, specifically, caused your site to crash? Many features (the ones that are listed as being able to cause potential problems) can disable a site if turned on when they’re not supported. Most however can be rolled-back by removing the Better WP Security section from .htaccess.

@chirmer I’ve installed this plugin on literally hundreds of sites. It does not remove the admin user however if your install runs out of memory, etc problems can arrise (as they can with any plugin). Restore your backup in that case and you will have no problem.

As I remember it, I was almost halfway through the checklist when the site locked up. There was so much to do to unhook from what this plugin caused that I don’t remember the specific issue any longer. Having disclaimers of potential harm does not absolve the author and the inability to get a clear route to support is frustrating. Those disclaimers probably should stand as a warning that the plugin may not be solid-ready. Regrettably, I don’t have the error log for this. I wish I did.

    – Removing the BWPS from .htaccess did not work.

    – Along with other actions, I did install the db backup.

On some sites this plugin seems to work fine but on others it caused similar misery and I ended up rebuilding sites completly. It took a while to find out it was caused by this plugin. What happens is that somehow it causes scripts to keep firing at the server, running the server down. I got messages like ‘Too many redirect’ and/or Internal Server Error 500. Even after the server was rebooted this started allover again.
After deleting all BWPS lines from the htaccess and another server reboot things calmed down.
What i wonder is wether this plugin only adds lines in the htaccess or that it also adds changes to the database which are more difficult to revert.
