[Plugin: Better WP Security] 163 different ips locked out of my site in 45 minutes-log-in attack

Hello, I am using this plug-in for several of my sites. I am having trouble with anything that writes on my htaccess files (i get internal server error). But I have log-in limits set. Today over 220 different ips were locked out of my site due to failed log-in attempts. This happened in a wave of two different ‘attacks’.
I have written before, concerning the htaccess file, but was unable to find a good solution. But now it is absolutely necessary to change the location of my log-in page. I am willing to hire someone if needed, but so much is altered in my site and database due to the fact that I have this plug-in (and multi-site). Any advice would be helpful, or suggestions of who I could hire to help with this would be great as well.
