[resolved] Cannot open zip file - whether downloaded via WP or FTP (8 posts)

    I get an error 'Unable to unarchive xxx (Error 1 - Operation not permitted)' when trying to open a zipped backup file with Archive Utility on a Mac.

    When I try using The Unarchiver I get 'You need to supply the filename encoding to open this archive'. But when I hit continue with UTF-8 I get another error and the downloaded directory is incomplete.

    Hope you can help.

    Unfortunately it sounds like your backups are corrupt.

    You could try downloading them over FTP in-case they got corrupted during the download.

    Hi Tom, thanks for the quick reply!

    The same thing happens whether I use FTP or the download link in WordPress.

    I just noticed a hidden file in the backups directory: .backup_warnings

    It contains:

    {"pclzip":{"657f068371d36dca9b63cd5a1a9abba5":"PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature"}}

    I'm not sure what that error is caused by (it's an internal PclZip error but it does tell me that your backup is failed and is corrupt.

    Could you try running a database only backup and see if that works.

    Yes, that works fine.

    Ok couple of things you can try,

    You could download the beta of BackUpWordPress V2 from here: http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/backupwordpress.zip

    You'll need to manually upgrade, but it may well fix your issues (and it has lots of new features).

    Or you could try switching back to database + files and excluding files until it starts working again.

    I think you likely have a corrupt file in your site (probably an image file) and thats causing the backup file to then be corrupted.
