I installed the Ajax Event Calendar (great plugin by the way) the other day. I just got around to starting to use it and I noticed that trying to rename existing categories or adding new ones leads me to a blank white screen when I try to submit. If I back out, nothing has changed – no new categories.

Also, I’ve seen in the instructions that it mentions being able to use a color picker to change the category color, but it doesn’t show up.

I’m on the latest version of WordPress, I’m on the latest version of the Event Calendar plugin. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin numerous times since I ran in to this issue.

    Any ideas?

It’s likely javascript conflicts caused by other plugins or your theme.
Check your browser’s javascript console for errors.

I’ve tried a little tinkering with the debugger in IE and with Firebug in Firefox, but I’m just not sure what I’m looking for on this. I’ve never had to chase down a javascript error before.

I’m not seeing any errors come up when I try adding categories. As I said though, I don’t know what I’m looking for. For all I know, I’m not using the debugger properly (I’m about 99% sure I’m not).

If it makes any difference, my theme is Mflat 1.1.3 (seems like a fairly straightforward little theme). I have the following plugins installed: Ajax Event Calendar, AStickyPostOrderER, Contact Form 7, Easy Table Creator, ICIT Weather Widget, Really Simple CAPTCHA, Sidebar Login, Simple Expires, Widget Logic, and WP Post Sorting.

If anyone would be so kind as to hold my hand through this, that would be great.

Edit: Just wanted to add, it doesn’t look like a theme issue. Same thing happens with other themes I’ve tried. I guess I can start disabling/re-enabling plugins until I find which one is causing a problem.

Ok, just got done deacvtivating my plugins one at a time and trying the Event Calendar again. It still won’t work for me. Where do I go from here?

Would someone care to take a look at my site?

If it’s not the plugins then it’s possibly your theme.
Try changing to the default Twenty Ten theme and see if it works then. If it still doesn’t work, then it could be backend server issues, in which case you’ll need someone familiar with PHP logs to help you out.

I tried changing the theme to Twenty Ten and Twenty Eleven and it didn’t make a difference.

I also looked around the forums here and saw another post from a few weeks ago with someone having the “Loading Events…” black box staying on screen when viewing the calendar. I’m having that issue as well. I don’t know if it is related, but that particular thread was never resolved, so I don’t know what’s causing it.

To throw a little more wood on the fire, I wanted to mention that I just set all of this up a few weeks ago. I’m running WordPress on Windows Server 2003 with PHP 5.3.

I looked over the PHP log and didn’t see anything related to the Event Calendar. There were plenty of other entries for other errors though.

I do appreciate your help on this. I’m the webmaster for a local county government in Kansas. We’re currently using a site I created from scratch when I started a few years ago with the intention of moving to a CMS one day. We were using Google Calendar for all of our county events and appointments, and we all hated the idea of our calendar information being on a third party website.

Now that I’ve finally been able to move us onto WordPress, the idea of having the calendar integrated with the site is welcome by everyone… Things have been going great except for this category issue.

I was curious if I created a temporary admin account for you, would you be willing to check out my site to help me nail this issue down?

What Database server are you running?
I ask because you mentioned a Windows Server and just in case you’re running MSSQL, you should know the plugin will only work with MySQL.

I don’t have time to assist with heavily customized implementations, especially ones with errors exclusive of the calendar. If you can clear the path of other errors and still have problems with the calendar, I’ll be happy to resume this path. I’m afraid that’s the best I can offer at this time.

    I’m running MySQL.

At this very moment, I have every plugin disabled and I’m using theme Twenty Eleven and I still cannot add categories in Internet Exlporer 8 and Firefox 3.6.3.

I’m using PHP 5.3 and WordPress 3.2.1. The only difference between my setup and most others is probably that I’m using Windows Server 2003, and that’s the only piece of the puzzle I cannot change.

What, if anything, can I do from here?

The variables you listed don’t raise any red flags in my mind.

To be clear, the only problem you are having is the inability to manage categories using IE8?

What version of the plugin are you using?

    Thread Starter cowley_mis

    (@cowley_mis)

    It’s 0.9.9.2

My main issue is the inability to manage categories. With all of the different things going on in our county courthouse, breaking down calendar events by color coded categories is a big deal for us.

I also cannot see a color picker on the category screen, and I’ve read there is supposed to be one. All I see is the number of the category, the category name, a place to input a hex color, Update and Delete. I can get by without a color picker, but other, less tech savvy users don’t know what a hex code is. Regardless, I’m not too concerned about this issue. Not a real concern for me.

My only other issue is that when I pull up a page with the calendar on it, the “Loading Events…” black box stays onscreen. Again, this is something I can live with if need be. I saw another user a few weeks ago was having this same problem.

Again, thanks for the help on this.

I’m trying to isolate the reason you can’t access this functionality while running the calendar without any other plugins and the twenty ten/eleven theme. All functionality has been tested and is confirmed to work on IE8+, FF5+, and Chrome.
As it stands the calendar should work for you, but clearly something is preventing it from doing so. That the problem is specific to the color picker is very strange and seems like a conflict. Also the loading box has only been reported by two users and I am unable to replicate this issue, which makes it impossible to address; and which is why I think it’s environmental.
But since no javascript errors, no PHP errors, and no WordPress errors are being logged, I don’t have anything to go on and can’t be of much further assistance. If you come across any new information and I’ll be happy to try again.

    I also have the same;

When I pull up a page with the calendar on it, the “Loading Events…” black box stays onscreen.

I have also tried switching to the default theme and de-activating all plugins, I have checked my error logs and used firebug and can’t see any errors. This happens on IE8/IE9 and FF6.

I am running Apache/2.2.16 with PHP Version 5.3.3 if that helps.

    @colhatty: what’s your URL?

Have the same problem as the OP…

The Calendar link in the Dashboard is gone. It appears to be a conflict with Thesis. Link

If you don’t want to wait until the next version is released, this known issue is covered in the FAQ.

When is the release expected to be?
