[Plugin: Advanced Custom Fields] implementing a controlled vocabulary as a taxonomy

  • Hugh

    @sillinguist

    I am looking for pointers on how to implement a large controlled vocabulary as a taxonomy in ACF.

    Use Case: I have a controlled vocabulary with about 7,200 items. This controlled vocab. is updated about annually.

    For one of the custom fields attached to my custom post I want one or more elements from the controlled vocab. (Much like tagging is done in standard posts.) However, unlike standard posts and tagging, which allows any input I want to allow only valid elements which are contained in the controlled vocab to be allowed in this particular custom field. Because the vocabulary is updated annually I need to be able to update the vocabulary annually but also not destroy or overwrite values previously set in the custom field.

    I have downloaded the taxonomy add-on for ACF and have implemented other taxonomies. But this one, I am unsure how to implement. Any ideas or suggestions?

    Hi @hugh

    What are you not sure about?

    Are you using the taxonomy field to prevent the client from adding more taxonomies?

    What do you need help with?

    The part I am not sure about is how to make a 7200 controlled vocabulary work without letting the client just input anything they want. I want to only allow valid items from the list.
