• This message is mostly aimed at happynuclear (I didn’t see any way to message you directly), the developer of AMU.

I love this plugin, and want to use it, but the current project for which I need to add multiple users requires the ability to add metadata. AMU has a much better design, and much clearer and better-documented processes, but it lacks this one feature. (I know, this is one of the “Future Development” goals.)

I have found another plugin which lacks the style and ease of AMU, but which contains a pretty good process for updating user_meta, Import Users from CSV. This plugin is fairly limited and straightforward, but gets the job done.
Import Users from CSV runs a bit differently, checking if the field names in the csv (the first row MUST be field names) match the Users table (a static list of fields contained in the plugin) and failing that, checks the user_meta table. Although this is a fairly different approach (AMU obviously requires the fields to be in a consistent order, and doesn’t care about a header row, using static, indexed field names), I’m hoping that I can help you integrate some of the features of the Import Users from CSV method, so that AMU can update user_meta.

I’ve thought about bashing away at this myself, to see if I can get it to work, but am not deeply into PHP programming, so it could be a painful process. I’m hoping that I can help you in integrating this functionality, as you obviously already have the PHP skills. (In case it’s not clear, “you” is happynuclear…)

I understand that AMU is a free plugin, and I’m sure you have other projects which may be more rewarding, but if there’s any way I can help get this functionality into AMU, I think it will be an even better plugin, filling a need that no other (free at least) plugin can fill.

  • Hi Robert,

I know this is a bit late and you’ve probably moved on from it at this point.

However I wanted to let you know (and other readers) that I will be attempting to improve the CSV method to include custom meta data (and standard fields) into the new release.

    Cheers.

I’m very glad to hear that! AMU is an excellent plugin, and I love the front end. With a little extra functionality (ability to import csv & ability to populate meta fields, even custom ones) and it will be a Swiss army knife of user management!

I have worked around it, but I would still prefer to have just AMU instead of AMU plus another plugin to handle the csv import and custom meta field population.
