I’ve just created my first post with this plugin. Firstly the image did not show up at all in Facebook, even though I did not touch the option to turn off Open Graph. I then added a featured image, refreshed the post and refreshed my Facebook page and a thumbnail appears. So, first odd thing: how come ALF found an image, told me it was going to use it (I didn’t unselect the image it said it was going to use) yet didn’t post it to Facebook? And how come this was solved by uploading a featured image and refreshing the post? I thought the plugin is supposed to take the first image from my post and use that to post to Facebook?

More importantly, since it has now posted an image to Facebook, why isn’t the image displaying any bigger than a thumbnail? I’ve selected ‘Picture Large’ under the options – does this make any difference to the image posted on my timeline?

I had high hopes for this plugin, it certainly looks great on paper, but I’m a photographer and the image element is an important aspect of this plugin.

    Any help gratefully received.

If the plugin finds an image, it will be posted to Facebook, but it is up to Facebook to display the image.

Images in posts are send as-is. Images from the image library (for example the featured image) are sent in the size as selected by the plugin option, but again it is up to Facebook to display the image.

As photographer I would hand select one of the images attached to the post (using the plugin meta box on the post editor page). In this way you’ll have maximum control over which image is sent to Facebook and you’ll will have control over the size of the image send to Facebook.

Hey Marcel, thanks for the speedy response, very much appreciated.

I’m not sure I understand your last paragraph. In the plugin meta box the order of options are:

    Select link image
    Custom excerpt
    Custom text
    Extra URL parameter
    Video URL
    Link Picture

The plugin automatically found an image and placed it in the ‘select link image’ part. It resized it to 285×285.

The next bits about video and excerpt etc are irrelevant until the last one…

The Link Picture it displayed was the same picture that I had added to my post. This was 1500px when I uploaded it and then I reduced it to ‘large’ before placing it in my post. Large on my theme is approx. 450px wide.

So why did it still send a thumbnail?

Send me the debug information as explained in the last question of the FAQ and I will see what is going on.

There appeared to be a bug in the plugin. If you manually selected an image, always a thumbnail sized image was sent to Facebook. It has been fixed in the development version.

Thanks for looking in to that, Marcel. I shall download the latest version and give it a whirl.

Where do I get the development version from? You link is to the current version I have installed, unless I missed something.

    Whirl sounds nice ๐Ÿ™‚
Please let me know if it solves your problem or not.

Look for ‘Follow these steps to install the development version’ on the page linked above.

    Hi Marcel

Thank you for such great plugin. This plugin is a 5/5 if I could have my photos on the wall in the large size. I make photos in 600px and upload them to the media library and then I have tested all settings that you have described in all posts (including this one) to get the photos in the biggest possible size on the wall of FB. I have downloaded and installed the development version but it still will not work.

The problem that I see is that when I use a large photo uploaded to FB on my wall people view it. When I make a post on my blog using Add link… I got feewer “hits” and that I think is because the photo is presented as a thumb.
Another thing that happens is that when I make a second post it is presented in the same โ€œcolumnโ€ on my wall as the first one and that makes the photo even smaller (like a mini thumb ๏Š).

If this can be fixed your plugin is problaby one of the best things happened to bloggers using FB.

What info do you need from me to solve this? I will help you in any way that I can ๐Ÿ™‚

All the best to you from Tomas in Sweden

@tenman18 – I’m not sure this is true. I read recently that Facebook has an algorithm that gives preference to your own posts and down-grades third-party plug-in posts. Without empirical evidence I would tend to agree with this. I was using Wordbooker for a couple of years and up until last year it was doing wonders for my Facebook/Wordpress integration. Now comments are dropping off at a rate of knots and I suspect this is Facebook giving Wordbooker low rankings in people’s streams.

Back to the OP – I have tried the development version and Facebook is still posting up thumbnails only, no matter what size I select to post to Facebook.

The plugin send the image in the size as specified, but Facebook only displays thumbnails. The size option is only meant to solve aspect ratio problems in some cases.

Another thing that happens is that when I make a second post it is presented in the same โ€œcolumnโ€ on my wall as the first one and that makes the photo even smaller (like a mini thumb ๏Š).

    See the FAQ, question U37.

Thank you so much both demonboy and Marcel.

    This is very interesting demonboy:

I will read the FAQ and get back to you ๐Ÿ™‚

U37 I don’t want my links grouped on the timeline

Ahhh, the power of reading from top to bottom, that one is now solved ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks. Will keep on reading.

Followed the link and it is interesting reading. Thanks!

But if I get this right the main “problem” with the photos/thumbs cannot be solved (now or later) because of Facebooks way of displaying photos?

    Is that correct?

    Is that correct?

    Yes, unfortunately.

I get back to the fact that it must be something that affects my wall posting with or without the plugin. When I use Add link toโ€ฆ I got 3 likes during 24h, when I post the exact same photo directly on my wall I got 8 likes in 30 minutes. So whatever causes this it is a problem, the number of likes tells me people have โ€œdoneโ€ something and without them I get a feeling of โ€œinsecurityโ€.

It is a great plugin and it makes my blog work a lot easier but in the best of worlds FB would display the photos in the large size.

I can also add that I am a photographer like demonboy ๐Ÿ™‚
